Hot-weather driving advice
Using your car’s air conditioning correctly can improve comfort, support driver concentration and help passengers cope with warmer summer journeys.
Ventilate the cabin before cooling it, begin with a temperature around 5°C lower than outside, use automatic climate control where available and direct the vents away from your face. Shortly before arriving, consider switching off the cooling function while leaving the fan running.
The temperature inside a parked car can rise quickly during hot weather. Before selecting the coldest air-conditioning setting, allow the hottest air to escape from the cabin.
Allow the initial build-up of hot air to escape before setting off.
Keep the windows open briefly at the beginning of your journey when it is safe.
Close the windows and allow the climate-control system to reduce the temperature.
Removing the hottest cabin air first means the system is not trying to cool air that has been trapped inside the vehicle while it was parked.
As a practical UK summer guide, begin with the cabin approximately 5°C cooler than the outside temperature. This can reduce the sudden temperature change experienced when entering or leaving the car.
Outside temperature
30°C
Suggested starting point
25°C
This is a comfort guide rather than a fixed rule. Adjust the setting gradually to suit the driver and passengers, particularly when travelling with children, older passengers or anyone sensitive to sudden temperature changes.
If your Škoda has automatic climate control, select a comfortable temperature and use the automatic setting where possible. The system can manage the fan speed and distribute air around the cabin as conditions change.
With manual air conditioning, begin with a moderate fan speed and avoid directing a continuous flow of cold air towards your face or body.
Effective airflow is about circulating cooled air around the cabin rather than directing it continuously at one person.
Direct it towards the left side window.
Angle them upwards towards the upper cabin.
Direct it towards the right side window.
If the airflow feels too cold, redirect the vents or lower the fan speed rather than closing every vent. This allows air to continue circulating and reach passengers in the rear.
3–5
minutes
A few minutes before arriving, consider switching off the cooling function while leaving the fan running. Continued airflow may help reduce moisture remaining around the system and lessen the chance of stale odours developing.
You can also raise the cabin temperature slightly as you approach your destination. This makes the transition from the cooled interior to warmer outdoor conditions feel less abrupt.
Visibility comes first: if the windscreen begins to mist, use your Škoda’s demisting setting and keep the air conditioning operating as required. Always follow the guidance in your vehicle handbook.
Air conditioning is not only useful during summer. It removes moisture from cabin air and can help clear misted windows during wet or cold Scottish weather. Regular use throughout the year also keeps the system operating rather than leaving it unused for long periods.
Like other vehicle systems, air conditioning benefits from regular inspection and maintenance. Look out for the following changes:
An annual air-conditioning check or refresh is a sensible guide. A full recharge should be completed when an assessment confirms that the system requires it rather than being treated as an automatic yearly replacement.
Cabin and pollen filters should also be inspected and replaced in accordance with your Škoda’s servicing requirements.

Helpful information
As a general comfort guide, begin with the cabin approximately 5°C cooler than the outside temperature and adjust it gradually.
Yes. Allowing trapped hot air to escape first can help the system cool the cabin more effectively.
You can switch off the cooling function approximately three to five minutes before arriving while leaving the fan running. If the windows mist, use the demisting setting immediately.
Yes. Air conditioning removes moisture from cabin air and can help clear misted windows during wet or cold weather.
A yearly check or refresh is a sensible guide. Arrange an earlier assessment if cooling performance reduces, airflow becomes weak or an unpleasant smell develops.
Not necessarily. A recharge should be completed when an inspection indicates that the refrigerant level or system performance requires it.
