From 1 September 2026, newly registered cars receive the new 76 age identifier. For motorists across Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife, Stirling and wider Central Scotland, it could be the perfect time to discover a new Škoda.
Explore New Škoda Cars View Current Škoda OffersThe 76 registration came into effect on 1 September 2026. It applies to qualifying new vehicles first registered between 1 September 2026 and 28 February 2027. It replaced the 26 registration, which applied from 1 March to 31 August 2026.
A registration change has always added an extra sense of occasion to collecting a new car. Seeing the latest number plate for the first time helps mark the vehicle as one of the newest cars on the road.

The two numbers in the middle of a current UK registration are known as the age identifier. For registrations issued between March and August, the number reflects the year. For registrations issued between September and the following February, 50 is added to that number.

The first two letters form the DVLA memory or regional identifier.
The age identifier shows the applicable six-month registration period.
The final three letters help create the vehicle’s unique registration.
This means that 26 was used from March to August 2026, while 26 plus 50 becomes 76 for the registration period beginning in September 2026.
New registration marks have been released twice a year, in March and September, since 1999. The change helped spread demand for new vehicles more evenly throughout the year rather than concentrating registrations around one annual plate change.
The current seven-character registration format was introduced on 1 September 2001. It uses two letters, a two-digit age identifier and a final group of three letters.
The March and September changes remain popular times to collect a new car, although customers can order or take delivery throughout the year, subject to vehicle availability and the agreed registration date.

A 76 registration immediately identifies a car as having been registered during the latest plate period. A private registration offers something different: a personal identity that can remain relevant after the 76 registration has been replaced.
A private registration is not necessarily better for every driver. It involves an additional cost and must be properly assigned to the vehicle. A personalised registration must not make a vehicle appear newer than it really is.

The combination of letters and the 76 age identifier could produce some memorable registrations for Škoda enthusiasts. Here are a few combinations to look out for:
